2012 San Diego Pottery Tour Update

December 8 & 9, 2012 will be the 5th Annual San Diego Pottery Tour. Go check the website to see the current artists and studio locations on the tour.

I am very excited to announce that this year the tour is combined with a 6-week long exhibit at Art & Light Gallery in La Mesa, representing each artist and locations. The gallery show will run November 10 - December 21 during regular gallery hours.

Mark the date for the reception: November 10, 6-8 pm !

 





 

2012 Coronado Art Walk

My first big show of the year ! Right on the water, facing downtown San Diego, in beautiful Coronado. With the weather we've had so far this Summer, this coming week-end will be yet another fine Summer week-end to hang out on the californian coast.
With restaurants, shops, beaches, and only minutes away from the Hotel Del Coronado, Artwalk is a free well attended event with 100 artists in different media (painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry,...), musical entertainment, and art activities for children.
This year, I will be at booth #33, right off First Street by the information booth, with a whole new set of work on display, from sets of rice bowls and sushi platters to my new series of decorative marble boxes and large center pieces. Exciting ! I hope to see some of you there !

Coronado Art Walk

37th Small Image Show starting today

A quick note about the 2012 Small Image Show opening today at Gallery 21 in the Spanish Village Art Center.
First, it's a great show ! Contrary to its title, it includes all media, not just pictures or paintings. All art is required to be no more than 10 inches in length in any direction. Which means a broad selection of art pieces that are sure to delight any visitors.
And the show is juried to ensure a high quality display. This year's juror is watercolor painter Joanna Mersereau. She will have the additional task to award three prices.
So don't miss out the reception on Saturday, January 28th, 4-8pm. Come mingle with the artists and discover what they've been up to.

Beautiful weekend at Mission Federal Artwalk in Little Italy



Two warm and sunny days drew a  record crowd in quaint Little Italy this past weekend, in celebration of the local art scene. Artist booths were spread out in a 5x6 blocks area, with 4 music stages and plenty of art activities for kids at Amici Park. Food booths got heavy competition from the local restaurants and eateries. The gelatos at Pappalecco are to die for ! Try the pappalecco flavor (dark chocolate with ground almond).
I was sharing a huge booth with 8 other potters from Clay Artists of San Diego. Great location on Date street, between Columbia and State. Booth opened on both sides of the street, allowing a nice breeze to cool us off all day. Darn breeze did play evil tricks on us, turning into short gusts at times. I lost a piece, and I wasn't the only one. A small price to pay for the amazing experience of showing my work and talking to people about it.
The day started kind of slow for me then sales slowly built up, what a relief ! Talking to people, explaining the techniques, showing off pieces in the sun definitely helped the sales. It was nice to see friends and acquaintances come by. Friends Eric and Ryan parted with one of my centerpieces, a big beautiful Raku bowl which I love. It is good to know it is in good hands. My one fan came by as well, with her husband. I unerringly run into her at most of my shows and she always makes a point of acquiring a new piece. Her advice, every time: raise your prices, your work is underpriced. My first collector, I suppose ! I heard the same advice from a good man who bought my first ever Raku piece (darn, I should have kept it !). There may be some truth to it. Better grab my work now :)
I had a mix of Raku, naked Raku, and porcelain pieces on display. Pretty much heavy on the decorative. Interestingly people this time were mostly into the functional. A good portion of my Raku pieces followed me back home, contrary to my previous shows. A good reason to be versatile and offer a range of ceramic work.
In the end lots of compliments to warm my heart. Enjoy the pictures.

Shows, shows, shows !

Another sign of the Christmas holidays approaching: crafts and arts shows and ceramics studio sales are keeping the holiday shoppers busy every weekends.

On Friday night, I was at Clay Associates' opening night for their December studio sale. A nice crowd of people showed up to get first pick on the Associates new work. All senses were pleased, with complimentary food, beverages, and live music. A great way to spend the evening ! I went back on Monday to have a quiet tour and check out the work by students. Oh and I picked up a bowl by Eric Wood, I had my eye on it since the opening. Lucky me, it was still there!

Some of my work is for sale at Clay Associates until Dec 19th. Porcelain teapots, big platters, decorative vases. Some Dry Earth orchid pots. Some new Raku pieces (bottles, folded vessels, jars). The Raku work is selling quick, half of it was gone by Monday ! I have more at home though. My door is always open for a private tour !

On saturday, I got up early to go to a small but incredibly well attended art show, the 47th Annual Winter Carmel Valley Artists Show and Sale, at Karl Strauss Brewery Gardens in Sorrento Valley. Was it the myriad of fine craft offerings, or the complimentary finger food and mimosas that drew the crowd ? Likely both. It was packed and people were pleased, shopping and sampling to their heart's content. Two of my fellow potters were there with their collection. I managed to say hello and snap a few pictures between customers. Great job, Cindy and Karen !
